Borage oil (Borago officinalis), also known as starflower or cucumber herb, originates from countries around the Mediterranean. This borage plant is a well-known herb with beautiful blue flowers. The oil from this borage/starflower plant is extracted from the seeds.

Borage oil is an important source of the polyunsaturated fatty acids linoleic acid and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is an essential omega-6 fatty acid.
Borage oil contains the highest GLA - gamma-linolenic acid of all vegetable oils - 23%. GLA (gamma linolenic acid) is very rare in our modern diet. This can lead to a deficiency in unsaturated omega-6 fatty acids. Normally, our body is able to form GLA from linoleic acid (LA), but genetic factors or dietary deficiencies can disrupt this process.

Borage oil works best with prolonged use (at least several weeks), and it is advisable to take it with a meal that contains some fat, so that the absorption of GLA is optimal.
What does Borage oil do?
The GLA in the oil is converted in the body into prostaglandin E 1 (PGE1).
The high concentration of gamma-linolenic acid in borage seeds stimulates the formation of prostaglandins, which are substances that are essential for balanced hormone levels in women. In addition, the GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) in borage oil supports the skin's natural abilities.
