Step 1: colour on your plate

Did you know that different colours of fruit and vegetables are healthy? They ensure a good mix of nutrients on your plate. Brightly coloured fruit and vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These substances support our immune system!

Tips for colourful nutrition:

  • Green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale
  • Red and orange vegetables such as peppers, carrots and tomatoes
  • Blue and purple berries
  • Yellow and green bananas and kiwis

Step 2: together in the kitchen

Make cooking a fun family activity. Let the children help with washing, cutting and stirring. By cooking together, they learn about nutrition. They also have more fun tasting new, healthy dishes.

Healthy recipes to try together:

  • Colourful fruit salad with a touch of honey
  • Roasted vegetable skewers with herbs
  • Smoothies with different types of fruit and yoghurt

Step 3: enjoy the adventure

Healthy eating does not mean it cannot be tasty. Treat yourself to delicacies such as yoghurt ice cream with fresh fruit or crunchy (vegetable) crisps from time to time.

With children, it often doesn't help to “ban” unhealthy foods. It helps to teach children that everything is allowed, but in moderation.

If you are too strict with your children, they may start eating unhealthily later on. It is important to find a balance. Too many rules can be counterproductive.

Remember that everything is allowed, in moderation!
