What is Vitex?

Vitex Agnus Castus, also known as monk's pepper or chastity tree, is a plant that has been used in herbal medicine for centuries. It is a large shrub with blue, pink or purple flowers. Purple berries, which resemble black peppercorns, develop under the flowers.

The plant is mainly found in the Mediterranean region, Central Asia and North America. The name “monk's pepper” comes from the Middle Ages. Monks, who liked to grow this plant in their monastery gardens, used the berries as an alternative to ordinary pepper for their vows of chastity.

The use of monk's pepper for health purposes dates back even further than the Middle Ages. In ancient Greece, the berries of the plant were also used to combat various ailments. Its use is said to have been described in the writings of Hippocrates for the improvement of various women's ailments, as well as inflammation.

The effects of Vitex

Even today, the berries of Vitex agnus-castus are used to naturally support women with hormonal complaints. Vitex is mainly used for:

  • PMS and menstrual complaints: it can reduce symptoms such as mood swings, breast tenderness and abdominal pain.
  • Irregular menstruation: it helps to regulate the cycle.
  • Menopausal symptoms: it can provide natural support for hot flushes and mood swings.
  • Fertility: some women experience an improvement in their fertility thanks to a better hormone balance.
  • Acne: hormonal acne can also be reduced by the hormonal balance.

The active substances in monk's pepper are flavonoids, terpenoids and iridoid glycosides. These substances contribute to improving hormone balance in various ways:

Influence on the pituitary gland and hormonal balance

The effect of Vitex is largely attributed to its influence on the pituitary gland, a gland deep in the brain that plays a key role in controlling the hormonal system. Vitex is thought to stimulate the release of luteinising hormone (LH) and at the same time reduce the production of prolactin, a hormone that in excessive amounts can lead to cycle complaints, breast tenderness and fertility problems.

By lowering prolactin, the balance between progesterone and oestrogen is indirectly promoted. Many hormonal complaints, especially in the second half of the menstrual cycle (luteal phase), are associated with a relative deficiency of progesterone. Vitex may offer support in this regard.

Effect on the nervous system: GABA and flavonoids

In addition to its influence on hormones, there are also indications that the flavonoids in monk's pepper have an effect on the GABA system. GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a neurotransmitter with a calming effect on the central nervous system. It plays a role in relaxation, stress reduction and sleep. Although research is still in its early stages, this suggests that Vitex may also contribute to emotional well-being, for example in cases of irritability or mood swings around menstruation.

What does the science say?

There is now a growing number of studies focusing on Vitex agnus-castus, particularly in relation to hormonal complaints such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and the more severe form PMDD. Clinical studies and systematic reviews show predominantly positive results, with the safety of use also being well substantiated.

For example, a randomised, placebo-controlled study published in BMJ (2001) showed that a standardised Vitex extract was more effective than a placebo in reducing common PMS symptoms such as irritability, breast tenderness and mood swings¹. A later review in Phytomedicine (2013) confirmed these results and concluded that Vitex is promising for menstruation-related symptoms². A systematic review of eight randomised controlled trials also concluded that Vitex was effective in all cases studied for PMS or PMDD and was generally well tolerated.

Research has also been conducted into the influence of Vitex on prolactin levels. In women with forms of hyperprolactinemia, Vitex showed a normalising effect, comparable to the drug bromocriptine, but with generally fewer side effects³.

How long should you use Vitex?

It is recommended to use Vitex daily for at least three months. This is because hormonal processes are slow and it takes time for the body to respond to the regulating effect of Vitex. The herb works via the pituitary gland, a central link in your hormonal system, and influences, among other things, the balance between progesterone and oestrogen. This adjustment happens gradually, which is why consistent and long-term use is important in order to experience results.

Important: do not take this herb if you are using progesterone or other hormones (including the contraceptive pill). Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding is also not recommended. In these cases, always consult a doctor first.

Conclusion

Vitex is a powerful and natural herb that can help many women support their hormone balance. Whether you suffer from PMS, irregular periods or menopausal symptoms, Vitex offers a natural alternative that can gently regulate your hormone balance.

In addition to using supplements, other lifestyle factors also play an important role in keeping your hormones in balance. These include getting enough sleep, regular exercise, a healthy diet and reducing stress. By combining these elements, you give your body the best chance of staying in balance naturally.
