With Easter approaching, there's no getting around it: eggs. Boiled, fried, poached, anything is possible! But are eggs really that good for you? Sometimes, with all the well-intentioned advice out there, it's hard to see the wood for the trees. Which information I read is true and which is not? Our experts at VitaminFit have figured it out for you in the blog below.

In this article, you will read

  • Whether free-range eggs are healthier than regular eggs
  • Whether eggs are bad for your cholesterol
  • Whether eating raw eggs is dangerous because of salmonella
  • Whether eggs are an excellent source of nutrients
  • Whether organic eggs are healthier than free-range eggs

#1 Eggs from free-range chickens are healthier than regular eggs - MYTH

It is a common misconception that eggs from free-range chickens are healthier than regular eggs. In reality, there is no real difference in nutritional value between the two.

What is important, however, is the living conditions of the hens. Eggs from hens that are allowed to roam outdoors often have a better quality of life, but this has no direct influence on the nutrients in the egg itself.

#3 Eggs are bad for your cholesterol - FACT & MYTH

Although eggs contain cholesterol, a number of studies have shown that consuming eggs does not lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in healthy people. In fact, eggs contain many healthy nutrients, including high-quality protein, vitamins and minerals, which can contribute to a balanced diet.

On the other hand, some studies show the opposite. Therefore, more research is needed into the relationship between egg consumption and cholesterol levels. The Nutrition Centre recommends a maximum of 2-3 eggs per week and 3-4 eggs per week for vegetarians.

#3 Eating raw eggs is dangerous because of salmonella - FACT

Eating raw eggs does indeed carry the risk of salmonella infection. This is especially true for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

It is therefore important to always cook eggs thoroughly before consuming them to reduce the risk of illness.

#4 Eggs are an excellent source of nutrients - FACT

Absolutely true! Eggs contain a wide range of essential nutrients, including vitamins A, D, E, B vitamins, iron, zinc and selenium. They are particularly rich in high-quality protein, which is important for building and repairing tissues in the body.

#5 Organic eggs are healthier than free-range eggs - FACT & MYTH

On the one hand, this statement is a myth. All eggs contain good nutrients, such as protein and vitamins. Organic free-range chickens do, of course, have better living conditions than free-range chickens.

You can also see this statement as a fact. Organic chickens are kept in a more natural way, without the use of antibiotics or other unnatural substances. This can result in a better overall quality of the egg. So if you have the choice: choose an organic egg!
